Folder appearing after start-up

R

Ralph Tomaccio

I had to reload Windows XP Pro on my laptop today and now
whenever I startup, the C:\Documents and
Settings\Ralph\My Documents folder opens automatically.

I tried looking in the Startup Folders and nothing there
seems to be causing it. How do I stop this from happening?

Thanks.

I was mistaken on the name of the folder which keeps
appearing on startup. The correct name is:

C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Applications

Thank you!

Hi Ralph,

As a general checkpoint:

Check your runkeys and/or Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup or
Start/Run/Msinfo32/Software Environment/
Startup Programs for any listed with spaces. If so, they need to be
included within quotes.

Kelly,

Thank you for your help.

I wish I knew more about the innards of Windows but I am
learning slowly. I opened Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup and
found the folder listed at the very top of the Startup
items to the right of a checkbox with the name
of "Apoint". And after the folder string there is "-
Sony\Apoint\Apoint.exe"

I unchecked the box and tried restarting. It now starts
without the folder opening but now I get a "System
Configuration" window saying I need to go back and undo
what I did so that I can start up "normally".

Is there some way to take that whole line out of the
start up folder?

I also checked in Start/Run/Msinfo32/Software
Environment/Startup Programs and did not see that folder
string listed. Is it because I have it unchecked in
Startup?

When you say to look for "any listed with spaces" . . .
If so, they need to be included within quotes." I don't
understand what I need to do. I couldn't seem to be able
to change it at all.

Your continued help is most appreciated.

Hi Ralph,

There is an option when that box appears to not show this again. However,
you can either remove the runkey that causes the msconfig selective box or
as you are asking remove the entry completely.

Ralph, next time you startup and see that message, there's a little box at
the left that you should check. It says Don't show this again at Startup or
something similar.
