Okay I've got a weird problem - my floppy drive spins for about 10 seconds
about once or twice a day (that I notice, I'm not always around my computer).
It's intermittent, and I can't find a cause.
Hardware: this is happening in my rather hi-end HP notebook computer. The
floppy drive is built in, not removable.
Software: Windows XP SP2, all updates applied. Protected by McAfee
Enterprise 8.0i along with Windows Defender (beta 2). There are other beta
products installed: WMP 11 and Office 12 (2007 beta).
My thoughts: I would expect a probably cause to be a recently-used file from
a floppy drive in my Recent Doc's, causing it to check for the presense of
the file or something. But I haven't used my floopy drive all for months
(maybe year or more--my 1gb flash stick takes care of anything I need).
I might also expect some type of scan going on to check for the presense of
a disk, but as far as I can determine, Windows Defender isn't running any
kind of scheduled scan, and I know McAfee isn't.
I checked my event logs. For system there's nothing out of the orinary
execept for many (hundreds?!) of DHCP warnings about my lease time expiring
and not being able to renew for some reason... i'd like to figure out what
that's about. It must not take it too long to renew because I'm still
connected. Anyway...
Under application there's a lot of notices from Office Beta 12, but nothing
critical looking, or anything that would make me assume it was a process that
wanted to use my floppy drive.
My system is very clean and well kept. I'm not sure what's going on here...
or if I should even care.
