I have a floppy Disk.. I inserted it into the floppy drive.. and in my
computer i doubled clicked on the Drive A icon.. However, it didn't open and
a messege appeared asking to format the Disk..

Is there any way to fix this problem?

Try another working Floppy you before and see if the Floppy Drive will read
that, if not try the Device Manager by Right Click My Computer and Select
Hardware (If you XP Machine), then see if the Floppy have an Red X on it or
is it there with other Storage Drivers listed!.
You may have the Connector Loose or you may need a new Floppy Drive.
Hope this helps

I tried another floppy and it worked well..

the problem is the floppy has important files on..is there any way to get
those files?

I also have a third floppy that opens well, however, the MS files on that
disk do not open.. and I can't even copy them to my desktop

is there any way to get the files?

thank you

Hi R,
Is the files on the floppy are that old DOS files for an Old Programs that
not installed on your computer!.
Another thing to try to open the Floppy in Windows Explorer or try to open
it on another PC.

Your best bet for opening the floppy and obtaining the data is to find an
older machine running Win 9X or even W2K. Attempt to copy the files from it
to a thumb drive or copy and finalize it to a CD. Move the thumb drive/CD
to the XP machine.

There are two problems with floppy drives. 1. They are notoriously fragile
and will become unusable frequently with no apparent cause (lost much data
on floppies when I was transferring on floppies to and from work many years
ago before thumb drives and cheap CDs were available. Seems that the
magnetism in the starter in the car I was driving erased the floppies which
was found during much experimentation)

2. Windows XP doesn't really support floppy drives as well as previous
versions of Windows did. If you refer to NG posts from years back this is a
apparent pattern.

Was this diskette written on a computer running an older version of Windows?
If so, format a blank diskette on your Windows XP computer, then take both
diskettes to a computer running Windows 95, 98, or Me. Copy the old one to
the new. The new one should now be readable on your XP computer.

For an explanation of why this is happening, read here:
