floppy disc failure

When I startup, it stops with the message "floppy disc failure Error 40".
By pressing F1, it will continue the startup process with no problem.
I didn't used to have this but has been going on now for about a month. I
can only startup by using F1 now.
What changed to cause this? And what is a floppy disc failure?

Jim, you probably got a choice between Delete and F1. Hit Delete next
time and enter the Bios. Set the Boot Disk order
to hard drive, cdrom and floppy last. Save the changes and Exit.

Usually indicates that the floppy drive or the floppy controller on the
motherboard is defective, could also be a loose cable. Does the floppy
drive work once the computer is booted? If the suggestion offered by
Rich doesn't fix things you can go in the BIOS and disable the floppy
drive. If the floppy is defective it is easy to replace it and they
only cost about $10-$15. If the controller is defective, well then you
have to replace the motherboard or do without a floppy drive. You could
run a hardware diagnostic test on the pc, you may have received such a
utility with your computer or you might be able to download one from the
manufacturer's web site.
