Fixing "Apply to all folder" view doesn't work. How to fix, pls?

S

StargateFan

XP is unstable, it doesn't keep the view we choose when we change from
the system default of large icon view. Can someone pls provide the
fix, even if it's a registry one, to get this to remain what we choose
- in my case, I always use the details view with the name column being
a respectable size large enough to see filenames for which I take full
advantage of LFNs. I have the option to remember individual folder
views unticked in the folder's view settings.

TIA.

Hi,

Try the fix at line #2 here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Titled "Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000"

Note that this resets your existing folder views, and also increases the folder view size to 8000 (being the max supported value).

Hi,

Try the fix at line #2 here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Titled "Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000"

Thanks, I don't know what this will do, if it will keep my details
view exactly as I like and also without switching around to other
views, but I'm giving it a go.

Once I knew the name of the file to dl, which is always the case, tons
of things came up in google that didn't come up before:
http://forumz.tomshardware.com/soft...ly-reg-file-made-difference-ftopict96200.html
I see I'm not the only one with this frustration <g>. This particular
page talks about something called Autosizer and a couple of registry
keys to delete, so perhaps the solution is at hand.
http://forumz.tomshardware.com/soft...ly-reg-file-made-difference-ftopict96200.html
Good for when the above vbs file you recommend from that site doesn't
work (which apparently happens often enough). <g>

It never ceases to amaze how what works reliably and without problems
in Win98SE requires all these workarounds and tweaks in Win2K and
WinXP. Phew, hope the end is in sight.

I also stumbled upon classic view for control panel through this
exercise. That was kewl. No more clicking through various things
trying to find what I need since I'm back to the classic view for this
as well. One stop clicking. I like utilitarian functionality coupled
with extreme reliability. Why'd they let that go after Win98SE, I'll
never know! Sure the power and all the other things are great in the
newer OSs, but you can't navigate and work around everything anywhere
near as easily without all sorts of tweaking to get rid of FLUFF! But
I'm much more hopeful now than before. My XP tweaks folder of tips
and files may be growing but hopefully WinXP doesn't need the yearly
or bi-yearly wipes/reinstalls that Win98SE did (I'm told it doesn't.
But we shall see ... <g>). If I can get that functionality and
control back even if it takes some time initially as is turning out to
be the case, no worries. I'll really be a happy camper soon, I'm
beginning to believe!
Note that this resets your existing folder views, and also increases the folder view size to 8000 (being the max supported value).

No problem. I only ever use one view except for large icons in the
control panel and every once in a blue moon in an icon folder here
and there. _All_ the other times I use details view with most of the
space taken up by the name.

Thanks. :blush:D

Yes. You're certainly not alone ;) Good luck and let's know how it goes after applying the fix. Even if that does not work, there is another comprehensive method (tip from David Candy) that requires direct registry editing, which erases all the saved views, Quick Launch settings etc.

Read this also, carefully:

Understanding Saved Views and Browsing Folders:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...serv/reskit/prork/prde_ffs_fpeq.mspx?mfr=true

<quote>

When you clear the check box for Remember each folder's view settings , the following happens:

..When you start Windows Explorer, the first folder you view displays in the folder's saved view. Windows Explorer holds that view in temporary memory and applies it to all the folders that you visit while Windows Explorer remains open unless you manually alter the view.

..As you browse to other folders (after the initial folder is opened), the saved view for each folder is ignored, and when you quit Windows Explorer, the folder view that you have been using to view multiple folders is deleted from temporary memory.

..The next time you open Windows Explorer, once again, it is the saved view of the first folder you open that determines how you view multiple folders.

This is going to drive me nuts. At work I got around this issue with

If anyone comes up with a better idea that works, pls let me know!

Yeah, I don't hold out any hopes for this. I've turned on that
feature in Win2K countless times. It just doesn't do the trick. I
did this in XP last week and it didn't do any good here, either. Did
that and rebooted, too, all to no avail. XP fails sooner or later to
open the folders in the proper view. <sigh> But I'll try it one more
time.

This is really stupid and is slowing me down. Doesn't _anyone_ have
any proper working solution to this???!!! It never ceases to amaze me
how Win98SE out of the box is just so much better in how Explorer
works than anything that came later. Search is better, structure is
completely stable. I choose the view I want and THAT'S IT! It never
changes. After 7 years of that stability, it's really hard to get
used to something inferior! What happened????? Why are Win2K and
WinXP so awful in this regard??!! XP's Explorer provides nothing with
all the fluff "enhancements". It's only pretty stuff that just isn't
functional. I'd prefer a simpler more straightforward design like
98's that actually works to all this prettiness that doesn't! <sigh>
It gets really tedious having to always slide things out of the way
and re-apply a view so that I sort of get what I need part of the
time.
When you clear the check box for Remember each folder's view settings , the following happens:

When you start Windows Explorer, the first folder you view displays in the folder's saved view. Windows Explorer
holds that view in temporary memory and applies it to all the folders that you visit while Windows Explorer
remains open unless you manually alter the view.

Well, after a reboot everything changes no matter what I do. It's a
serious flaw that I wish could be fixed. I've tried _everything_ that
I can think of and have followed the advice given.

Sooner or later, it goes back to the default large icons no matter
what. The only difference is that at least XP is a tiny bit more
reliable than Win2K. With that OS, which I've worked on in different
work contracts over the years, it doesn't remember the view chosen
more than about 2 or 3 times. I'm seriously considering switching to
an alternate Explorer here at home, too. It's going to be a problem
since all the Explorer replacements I've tried don't replace Explorer
comprehensively and each one is good but they don't always integrate
well with all the shell extensions since XP still hasn't improved a
lot over Win98SE and I still have to install these enhancements. I
can live with that loss of functionality at the office but not at home
<sigh>

Anyway, if no one has anything better in terms of a proper, working
solution, I'm going to have to hunt down a better explorer
replacement. If anyone knows of something good in _that_ regard, btw,
wouldn't mind hearing about it, either <g>.

Thanks.

Thanks will take a look at it.

With regards to Explorer replacements, of which I've tried probably
about 20 by now, I found a very interesting one called CubicExplorer.
It seems to do a lot of what I need.

The only issues are that it flickers while doing operations and it
crashed Win2K rather frequently at the office. But I will try it here
at home. There might not be those issues here.

But details view is stable _and_ it highlights the entire row which
I've learned to like.

Anyway, thanks for the above link. Will report back if it's
successful. Don mind the QL folder preferences. I imagine easy
enough to re-do.

Hah, didn't work! Well, XP's Explorer is just such a piece of junk!
After all that work, some of which I'd done before with regards to
delete bagMRUs, etc., the settings don't last.

So that's it. I'm not wasting any more time. I'm going to look full
time for an explorer replacement that works. Enough wasted time
already.

Thanks for everyone's help nonetheless. Cheers. :blush:D

Had to report back. I've found what seems to be the absolute perfect
replacement and <crossing fingers> what XP's windows epxlorer should
be and that is Opus Directory 8 (for me). I'm sure it would not be to
everyone's taste, but its high degree of customizability and
incredible ease of use make it a winner for me. So no more cries for
help against XP's explorer, I believe. This program integrates with a
wizard and takes over Explorer to the degree that we want/need.

So thanks for everyone's help, yet again, in this regard. I really
appreciated it. Nothing helped but it no longer matters. 2 days
into this app and I just hope it works always as well as it has so
far, which has been incredible. It's gotten me back to Win98SE
seamless and smooth operations again and I relish not being slowed
down with needless fiddling and mucking about. That's what is should
always be like and I've gotten that back <crossing fingers> <g>. Now
I can just enjoy the benefits of this OS, of which there are some, of
course. Didn't want it to seem that there weren't _any_ <lol>. The
aggravations were seriously masking them, though.
