Fix MBR

R

Ron Eggler

Hi,

I installed a new copy of WinXP and I can't boot without the CD, because it
tells me, it wouldn't have any Bootable device... :(
I already started the recovery-console from the CD and tried to fix it with

fixmbr
fixboot c:

but no success... :( why, what could it be?
could there be a broken MBR on the HDD?
Thanx!

Chkdsk The /p switch runs Chkdsk even if the drive is not flagged as dirty.
The /r switch locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. This
switch implies /p. Chkdsk requires Autochk. Chkdsk automatically looks for
Autochk.exe in the startup folder. If Chkdsk cannot find the file in the
startup folder, it looks for the Windows 2000 Setup CD-ROM. If Chkdsk cannot
find the installation CD-ROM, Chkdsk prompts the user for the location of
Autochk.exe.

Hi Ron,

Thank you for posting!

I believe S.Sengupta and Michael's suggestions will be helpful.

If you still fail to start Windows XP from hard disk, you may try to
perform repair installation (also named in-place upgrade) of Windows XP to
rewrite the MBR information.

For detailed information, please refer to KB article:

315341 How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP

Have a nice day!
