Five-minute freeze after dial-up connection

F

Fernando Ronci

Hi,

What can have gone wrong with my dial-up setup that every time I dial my
ISP, and right after the connection is established, Windows XP freezes for
five minutes and remains absolutely unresponsive, except for the
displacement of the mouse cursor ?
For example, if I click on any given icon during the 5-minute freeze period,
the application is not launched. Not even the "Start" button responds to
clicks. After the 5-minute period elapsed, Windows unfreezes, everything
returns to normality and all applications (which I tried to launch during
the freeze period) are run at once, including *all* clicks on the "Start"
button.
I hope readers can figure out the problem from the previous description.
The anomaly started happening suddenly, and for no apparent reason, as I
didn't install or uninstall anything. I didn't make any configuration
changes either (e.g. TCP/IP properties, modem properties, etc.)
The system is virus and spyware/adware free. No third-parties programs are
running on the taskbar, just Windows' native programs and services. No
hardware was added/removed either. The modem driver is the latest. Windows
XP SP2 firewall is enabled, and so are the Windows updates via BITS.

At this point, and with no clues, I cannot myself spot the root of the
problem.
So, if someone knows why Windows goes through a 5-minute freeze right after
a modem connection to a PPP server is established, I will appreciate if
he/she lets me know the cause and the workaround, if exists.

Thank you.

Gut reaction is that it is probably an Internet-destined query activated
by one of your programs. This commonly occurs with programs, desktop
shortcuts and other settings which seek a connection, fail to find it,
and keep knocking at the door unti it timeouts. Most TCPIP connections,
for example, seem to default at 30-45 seconds.

As noted under another recent thread, open up MSCONFIG and uncheck as
many programs as possible and attempt to reconnect. Through a process
of elimination, you might discover the culprit. As a last step,
temporarily disable the firewall. It could be that a protocol running
over the connection is being blocked and you are suffering from the
timeout cycle.

Next, make certain that you do not have desktop icons that are pointing
to a remote site (and, for that matter, your desktop wallpaper). I once
witnessed a bank officer take nearly five minutes to boot his PC because
his administrators had loaded his desktop with shortcuts to resources
linked via a not-so-broadband connection.

As a final thought, make sure that you do not have any remote folders
mapped in Windows Explorer. It could be possible that you are
attempting to link to a remote share immediately upon logon and this
may be causing a timeout.

This is happening is me also. I have a new computer running xp. It doesn't
seem to do it all the time, but I would say 8 out of 10 when connecting to
the internet

Hi
this is the first time I have needed to get any help in this way, but
straight away
this section heading is exactly the problem I am encountering.
Brand new pc
virus protected etc
not loaded any software other than what was supplied.
System running great for 2 weeks but for some reason while Im online after
about 1/2 an hour the thing freezes!!
I have ever since I had the pc been getting error messages when I shut down
outlook express
the error message reads
'you experienced an error, compiling an error message to be sent to
Microsoft.' Sometimes I press send mostly I dont. Ive never recieved
anything back from Ms and my sent Items dont show that anything has actually
been sent?
However this freezing of the computer is really annoying.Pressing control
alt delete does not sort the problem.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

The outlook express error message happens to me once in awhile but not often.
And once the intial freeze when I first connect it does okay. I havn't found
any definite fix for it. And your right it is annoying. If you find out how
to fix this, Please let me know.
