FireWire Networking

I've got 2 PCs in my room, PC1 and PC2.
PC1 has the direct broadband Internet connection. PC2 has
no Internet connection.
Each run Windows XP Home Edition.

I have connected them together through 1394 FireWire.
Both computers detect each other. I know this because the
connection status icon in the taskbar gets a red X in it
when one of the PCs is turned off.

So far so good. Both PCs detect each other. The problem
is, that after running the Network Setup Wizard on each
PC, PC2 doesn't detect the Internet connection from PC1
anymore.

I want PC2 to detect this connection successfully. It
used to before, and when it did, after a restart or two,
it stops detecting the Internet connection from PC1.

How can I successfully get PC2 to use the Internet, from
PC1 permanently through my FireWire network?

That should work fine -- I'm using FireWire for Internet connection
sharing on my network.

Without knowing what settings you told the Network Setup Wizard to
make, it's hard to say what's wrong. I'd make the network settings on
each computer manually:

PC1 (ICS Host):

1. Un-share the broadband Internet connection.
a. Right click the connection.
b. Click Properties.
c. Click Advanced.
d. Un-check "Allow other network users to connect . . .".
e. Click OK.

2. If there's a network bridge, right-click and delete it.

3. Share the broadband Internet connection:
a. Right click the connection.
b. Click Properties.
c. Click Advanced.
e. Check "Allow other network users to connect . . .".
f. If it asks you to select a private network connection,
select the 1394 connection.
g. Click OK.

PC2 (ICS Client):

1. Configure the 1394 connection to obtain an IP address
automatically.

Thank you very much for your reply, Mr Winograd.

I have performed the steps. The Internet still did not
work on PC2. I then ran the Network Setup Wizard again on
both machines, and restarted PC2. But still, the Internet
would not go on PC2.

I had made sure that my other firewall program was not
interfering, so it can't be that.

I undrestand that you also have a FireWire network for
ICS. Does the Internet work all the time on your client
machine? How did you successfully set it up?

I would be very greatful if you can help me with your
experience of networking to help properly setup ICS on my
client machine through FireWire. I have searched, and
failed since December. It used to work, but not all of
the time. I had to re-run the NSW all the time. And then
it would stop working the next day!

Yours Kindly.

You're welcome. I set up my FireWire ICS exactly how I asked you to
do it, without using the Network Setup Wizard.

Don't run the Network Setup Wizard again on either computer, so that
we can eliminate it as the cause of the problems that you're seeing.

Please do some diagnostics on both computers.

PC1:

1. Open a command prompt window (Start | Run | Cmd) and type:

ipconfig /all >ipconfig.txt

2. Copy and paste the entire contents of the "ipconfig.txt" file into
your news group reply.

PC2:

1. Right click the FireWire connection and click Status | Support |
Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

2. If #1 is right, open a command prompt window and enter these lines.
Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.99
ping google.com

3. If #1 and #2 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer.
They should both take you to the Google web page:

http://216.239.39.99
http://google.com

"ipconfig" doesn't seem to work. In cmd, it
says "'ipconfig' is not recognised as an internal or
external command, operable program batch file".

It's supposed to work. What could be wrong?

After opening the command prompt window, type "ipconfig /all" at the
command prompt. On my computer, the command prompt is:

C:\Documents and Settings\Steve>

If that's what you're doing at it still doesn't work, try including
the folder name for "ipconfig" in the command that you type:

C:\windows\system32\ipconfig /all

Thank you very much for continuing to help me with this
issue!

I have managed to get "ipconfig" to work. Here is what is
said in the ipconfig.txt file created from PC1:

So far, we can see that the FireWire connection in PC2
shows different IP address details to what it should have
shown.

How can this information help me in getting PC2 to
achieve a proper connection with PC1?

Hope you can help!

Thanks for posting all that output -- it's very helpful. I see two
problems:

1. As you note, the FireWire connection in PC2 doesn't show the
expected values. It should be getting its configuration from PC1, but
it isn't.

2. These values at the start of the output for PC1 show "No", but they
should show "Yes":

IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

I think that problem #2 is the key, and problem #1 is a result of
problem #1. I'll do some research to find a possible solution, and
I'll post another message later.

Please run the Network Setup Wizard again on PC1, run "ipconfig /all"
again, and see what those two values show.

With your analysation of IP Routing and WINS Proxy being
disabled, I did a bit of research myself. I found that
the Routing and Remote Access service was disabled on
both PCs. I set it to automatic on both PCs and started
them.

Ipconfig then showed both titles as "Yes". I ran the NSW
on both PCs and restarted each. PC2 got the Internet
connection from PC 1!

I'm not sure if this will last in the long term. So I'll
test PC2 throughout today by restarting and using the net
on there contiuously.

I'll report back if it doesn't stay intact!

Thank you VERY much for your help, and for spotting where
my computers were wrong.

Regards!

I am now pleased to say the the Internet connection as
well as file transfers on PC2 seem to be permanent!

What I tried was, to switch off both PCs.
I logged into PC2 alone. There was no Internet connection.
I then logged on PC1. The connection automatically
arrived into PC2!

I'm very pleased with my FireWire network now. Thanks for
all your input!

Regards.
