Firewire External Storage problem with Win XP

Hello,

I have an IBM Thinkpad R31 connected via a Firewire card buswith to an
external HDD enclosure.

I am using an 80G Maxtor to back up my Laptop and to store photos and home
movies.

During file transfers, XP regularly pauses, locks up for short periods and
even stops with a Blue STOP screen.

The same problem occurs if I replace it with an IBM 40G or a Seagate 20G

This occurs consistently while viewing pictures with any viewer, eg ACDSee,
Compupic, Vuepro etc and when
using a movie player eg Win Media player (8 or 9) or WinDvd or
PowerDVD/VCD, Quicktime.

The problem is less consistent with file transfers although it still does
occur.

The Blue Stop Screen usually indicates the driver "disk.sys" as the problem
but also STOP: 0x07A and sometimes
indicates other drivers eg Fastfat.sys.

Event Viewer consistently logs the following messages:

Warning... Event ID: 51 Event Source: Disk...An error was detected on device
\Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation.

Error.. Event Source: sbp2port.. Event ID: 9.. The device, , did not respond
within the timeout period.

Error..Event Source: sbp2port...Event ID: 25...The driver has detected a
device with old or out-of-date firmware. The device will not be used.

I have reformatted my Laptop and reloaded Win XP SP1 but the problem is
still there.

I have connected the external HDD to 2 other Laptops (WIn 98se and WinME)
and they do not have the problem.

The problem does not occur when I access the External HDD from other
desktops through my Laptop when connected to my home network.

I have tried many other diagnostics and configuration changes to no avail.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

For what it's worth, I'm having very similar problems on a desktop
machine with IEEE 1394 Maxtor drives. I don't get blue screen errors,
but I do get delayed write failed errors, or the drive doesn't pass a
full disk scan with XP's Scan Disk.

There are many unresolved instances of this problem, though there are
a few posted KB's regarding this problem at Microsoft.com. However,
in my case, my machine is not set up to sleep, nor does it have blue
screen stop errors.

Anyone else have the problem or resolutions?

I'm going to suspect the drive for now, but these errors are quite
common on several other systems I've seen...

Cheers,
Dan
