It is debatable whether you will in fact get more protection with both
firewalls enabled. In the Windows Vista Security Center (Control Panel) it
says "Note: two or more firewalls running at the same time can conflict with
each other".

You need to find some "computer geeks" who actually know something
about computers. If these alleged "computer geeks" were members of Best
Buy's Geek Squad, you should listen to them very carefully, and then do
the opposite of anything they suggest.

You do need to have a firewall running, but there's no point in running
more than one. My position is that running two or more software
firewalls simultaneously is generally unnecessary and can _sometimes_
cause conflicts, potentially negating the protection of both. Even ig
there is no conflict, having two firewalls running simultaneously is
most certainly an unnecessary drain on system resources, without
providing any additional benefit.

In point of fact, with Vista's much improved built-in firewall, it's
not really necessary to use the Norton product, at all. You'd also find
that removing the Norton product will noticeably improve the performance
of your computer, as it's a huge drain on system resources, by itself.

There are two interfaces for Vistas built-in firewall:

1) A simplified one accessed through the Control Panel that is the only
one most people see. Sphinx's Vista Firewall Control
http://sphinx-soft.com/Vista/) does make the Vista Firewall much more
useful to the average user.

2) And the more advanced "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
(WF.msc)," accessed via the Start Menu's Administrative Tools folder,
for the experienced user who wants better control.

Additionally, please release or repair your CapsLock key. Posting
in all caps, as you have done, is the Usenet equivalent of shouting, and
is considered very rude by a large number of people; a great many people
won't even try to read such a message. More importantly, posting in all
caps makes the post harder to read, further reducing your chances of
getting help.

Ouch! Please don't yell at us. We can hear you if you type normally,
in mixed case.

You need to find better computer geeks. Don't run two firewalls. You
achieve no extra protection, you incur the extra overhead of running
two firewalls, and you run the risk (probably small, but not zero) of
conflicts between them.

See http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/firewall.mspx
which includes the following:

"Q. Should I use both the built-in firewall and a software firewall
from a different company on my Windows XP computer?

"A. No. Running multiple software firewalls is unnecessary for typical
home computers, home networking, and small-business networking
scenarios. Using two firewalls on the same connection could cause
issues with connectivity to the Internet or other unexpected behavior.
One firewall, whether it is the Windows XP Internet Connection
Firewall or a different software firewall, can provide substantial
protection for your computer."

Also note that if you update your third-party firewall to a new
version, the update routine will probably turn it off first. If the
Windows firewall isn't running, you will temporarily be left with no
running firewall, which is very dangerous. So turn on the Windows
firewall temporarily before doing maintenance on your third-party
firewall.

The Windows firewall monitors incoming traffic only. Almost any
third-party firewall will also monitor outbound traffic, stopping
rogue programs trying to call home, and is a better choice.

No. You don't need two firewalls. In fact they could actually conflict with
one another. If these computer geeks you refer to are within your circle of
friends, then I suggest you find some new friends.

A single firewall configured properly is all you need. There is no need
for 2 and having 2 quite often leads to problems especially when it
comes to diagnosing issues with connectivity.

Whoever the computer geeks are, they need to understand what they're
talking about before talking about it :)

I don't know if the version of Vista you have has IPsec but I think so,
which I won't make a direct connection to the modem and therefore to the
Internet without IPsec supplementing Vista's FW or any other personal FW
solution, as those solution can always be knocked out.

I just use the AnalogX policy rules, which have already been setup for you,
with IPsec to supplement the Vista FW, as IPsec is not a FW solution but
acts in a FW like manner.
