Firewall Error 1608

Emily

I get this error when trying to start the personal
firewall on XP. Error 1608 The dependency group failed to
start. So I checked to see if the ICF service is
running, it isn't, when I try to start it I get the same
error 1608. Of the services it is dependent on, the only
one not started is Remote Access Connection Manager. When
I try to start it, I get error message 5 Access denied.

HELP!!!!

Forget about xp's firewall. It will only monitor incoming activity. It does
not, as some people think, monitor outgoing activity.
Instead download the free version of Zone Alarm (www.zonelabs.com) This
monitors incoming and out going activity and is far more user friendly. You
can see what is happeniing and what applications are attempting to access
the internet. If you don't want an application to access the net, then
simply say no.
Seriously, my xp firewall has never been run. If i reinstall xp i the first
thing i do is disable the xp firewall and then install zone alarm.

Greetings --

Any trojan horse that gets on your system sends outgoing packets.

In addition to Chris's response, many shareware and freeware applications
are also spyware, acting very much like trojans, phoning home and sending
information from your setup. A firewall that traps outgoing activity would
alert you that this is going on.
