Firewall activation disables network access

R

Ryan

When I turn on the Windows XP Pro firewall my access to
network computers is lost. The network is solely based
upon XP, all computers are password protected, etc. Any
suggestions?

Enable only firewall for direct internet connection or else your problem
will not be solve.

The Windows firewall/ICF doesn't block outbound traffic - do you mean this
happens when you enable it on your "client" computer and try to connect to a
(non-firewalled) "host" computer?

The XP firewall is really not designed for LAN facing connections, although
it will be a little easier to configure for this in SP2. Make sure your
network is adequately protected at the perimeter - if you also want to run
local fw software, try another one like ZA or Sygate or ... and you may have
better luck.

WinXP's built-in firewall is not designed to be used on internal
LAN connections. The _only_ connection on which you should have ICF
enabled is the direct connection to the Internet.

Internet Firewalls Can Prevent Browsing and File Sharing

This matter is addressed in Service Pack 2. WinXP's redesigned
built-in Windows Firewall will allow exceptions for File & Print
Sharing.

Yeah, but if XP's firewall is already disabled, then this solution is
all balls and wax.
