This plugin allows you to check any file you are about to
download, any page you are about to visit with online version of Dr.Web
anti-virus! New menu item "Scan with Dr.Web" will appear on hyperlink
context menu.

Very cool. Right click on any link to a file on the net, and it will
automatically open another window, and scan with Dr Web's online
scanner.

I could be wrong, but it seems you don't even need to download the file
directly!

Very very useful.

This does sound like a very cool idea. Does anyone know anything about
Dr. Web? How reliable are they? How do they compare to other free AVs
like AVG or Avast? Will it provide protection similar to the more famous
AVs like Norton, NOD 32, Panda etc.?

They are a very well established russian Antivirus company.

IMHO and based on most AV tests (if you believe in them), they have
better detection rates than the free AVs
Will it provide protection similar to the more famous

KAV normally does best in on demand tests. Then a few others like
Norton,NOD32,Fprot,Bitdefender,McAfee,Panda (though this is seldom
tested) normally fight for the next few places. Dr Web also belongs in
this group.

Then comes TrendMicro, AVAST,Antivir,AVG etc.

Here's a typical test site

http://www.av-comparatives.org/

Look at the Feb 2005 on demand comparitives. The May 2005 attempts to
figure out how good their heuristics are. NOD 32 (non-free) rules in
this one as expected.

All in all, it's worth using to supplement AVG,AVAST,Antivir.
