Finding Duplicate Files

I inherited a family system with many duplicate files. Is there a utility,
or program, that will allow me to locate (and delete) duplicate (and
unnecesary) files?

http://www.v-com.com/product/PowerDesk_Pro_Home.html has a product called
PowerDesk that will do that for you. The current version if 6, but the
older, and free, version 5 works just as well.
I noticed they've redesigned the wet site and version 5, the free
version, was hard to find as it was; I'll bet it's even harder now. If you
can't find it htere, google for it; lots of places mirrored it.

It has many other features, but for what you want it'll compare files on
name, size, content, or any combo of those so it's really quite useful. If
they're graphics it has a thumb viewer too. I liked it so well I went ahead
and sprung for the $40 to get the Pro version.

I have something called finddupl.exe which is a standalone.
You can get it from http://www.freewareplanet.net/duplicate.php
The file you want is finddupl512.zip, similar things are listed, I
haven't tried them. This one seems to run very fast.

There is also something called fndup104.zip which takes a long time to
run because it's doing a byte to byte compare, this may be overkill for
what you want now but might be worth having.

I'm with Rock here. Deleting duplicate files just because they are
duplicates can cause trouble.
Try a clean install.

When getting a used computer I suggest doing a clean install of the
OS and programs. You don't want to "inherit" the OS problems,
malware, etc.

I just wanted to second Rock's comment above. If I got a used computer, the
first thing I would do with it would be to reinstall the operating system
cleanly. You have no idea how the computer has been maintained, what has
been installed incorrectly, what is missing, what viruses and spyware there
may be, etc. I wouldn't want to live with somebody else's mistakes and
problems, possibility of kiddie porn, etc., and I wouldn't recommend that
anyone else do either.
