Find and Replace problem

J

John Tjia

In order to show formulas quickly, I did a Find and Replace for the =
sign, replacing it with the apostrophe and the equal sign: '=. The
apostrophe makes the formula become a text string, so the actual
formula appears like '=SUM(A10:A15), for example. The apostrophe does
not actually appear on the screen, making this ideal for screen shots
to illustrate formulas in the worksheet.

Now when I want to revert back, I do a Find and Replace for the
reverse, but Excel seems to have trouble looking for '=, and so it
says it cannot find the data. So I have to convert everything back
manually.

Can anybody suggest a solution?

Hi John, Not sure if this is in earlier versions but in
Excel 2000 you can display the formulas just by going to
Tools / Options / View and then under "window options"
click on the box "formulas" and your formulas will all
display. Then just uncheck the box when you want them to
not display!

I guess that next time you'll do it a different way.

Anyway, this is just a little better then having to go into each cell
individually.

Copy the cells with the text formulas to a near by location, and
"PasteSpecial", <Values> <OK>.

Now, this gets rid of the apostrophe, but the cells are still text.

You can now copy them back to their original location with a simple "Copy",
"Paste".

All this occurs *without* your cell references changing since they are not
recognized by XL as being true formulas.

While they're all still selected from that last "Paste", simply hit:
F2 then <Enter> for each cell.
Since they are all selected, the focus will remain within the selection, so
this last step should be quick and easy ... THAT IS ... unless you've got
hundreds of them.
