Filter Keys "bug" in XP

S

Steve Nielsen

In both Windows 2000 and Windows XP if you hold down the right shift key
for 8 seconds a Filter Keys box pops up allowing you to enable, cancel
or change settings for Filter Keys which is an accessibility option to
ignore short key-strokes for x.x seconds (configurable).

In Windows 2000 the default choice (by pressing Enter) is Cancel, but in
XP the default is OK. This has resulted in Filter Keys being
accidentally turned on in some elementary and middle school labs runnng
XP which makes it appear as though the keyboard is malfunctioning when
typing normally. To fix it go to Start, Settings, Control Panel,
Accessibility Options, Accessibility Options (again), and uncheck all
the options check marked.

Is there a registry setting to disable this entire function of holding
down the shift key for 8 seconds completely?

Thanks once again to Micro$oft for deciding what we are supposed to want
and especially for burying settings in XP halway to China.

I *think* Kelly's fix is for sticky rather than Filter keys. But if in
Accessibility Options, you click Settings next to Filter Keys there is a
checkbox to use the shortcut - uncheck it and Apply

If you investigate the same part of the registry as is used by her fix ,
before and after doing that, you will probably find the setting: For
that kind of investigation I File - Export a key a bit (but not
excessively) further up, making sure to use Win98 / NT format rather
than the default, then use a
DOS FC a.reg b.reg > diffs.txt
to put differences in the fie

Alex,

Not sure what you mean by "making sure to use Win98 / NT format rather
than the default"

Didn't work. After doing as you suggested in the Filter Keys settings
there is no entry in the registry in that area for FilterKeys.

When you do a File - Export, choose the different file type in the Save
As dialogs drop down, so as to get ASCII not unicode

Sorry it did not work out. Might show up on doing an export of the
entire HKCU key - big but not beyond FC's abilities
