Files waiting to be burned

After installing a CD-RW I keep getting a message from Windows that I have
files ready to be written to CD. How do I turn that annoying pop-up message
off?

TIA

Basically you need to remove the files that are sitting in the temporary
directory waiting to be burned to CD. The files are in a hidden folder, so
you need to go into Control Panel/Folder Options (or Appearance and Themes,
Folder Options if showing XP's Control Panel). Then go to the View tab and
make sure you are not hiding hidden files and folders. Then go into Windows
Explorer or My Computer. Open the C drive, then Documents and Settings.
Find your profile (usually with your name), open that up and find the Local
Settings folder under your profile. Open that, open the Application Data
folder, then Microsoft and you'll see the CD Burning folder. Open it up and
delete its contents.

Patty:
Been there, done that. Unfortunately for me, the files that were
sitting there were files that I use regularly -- such as my Resume and MS
Project files. When I deleted the contents of the CD Burning folder, I lost
my data files entirely. Windows has moved -- not copied, but moved -- these
files from My Documents. [Which gives me another reason to chant the mantra
"Backup Backup Backup" to my friends.]
So how to I STOP Windows from moving files from My Documents to the CD
equivelant of the Microsoft Recycle Bin with out so much as a by-your-leave?

Thanks,

Is there anything you might be doing to cause these files to move? Like
right-click and Send To (CD Drive) or something like that? Windows doesn't
normally move files on its own.

When I build a system I clear the contents of the "send to" folder and
create network links so that I can easily make quick "backups" of important
files to other machines on my home network. Send to CD is not an option.

On the computer I am now building, Clean install of Windows, haven't
installed any other software, no data files. After setting up the basic
system, I install excess hardware a piece at a time. Installed a CD burner,
let Windows find it, shut down and installed a SCSII card. Upon re-boot, I
had "files waiting" to be burned.

They show up in the burn folder as "shortcuts", but if you empty the
folder, the files to which the shortcuts point go away along with the
shortcuts.

Now I have a new problem -- I added a mirrored RAID and put pagefile.sys
on the array. I rebooted and guess what -- I have pagefile.sys on the RAID
as desired but I also have a pagefile.sys linked to "C" drive that is
waiting to be burned to CD. I can't clear the folder, because pagefile.sys
is a system file, and I can't delete the extra pagefile.sys because it is in
use by the folder.3

thanks,

steve

Really odd, Steve. I can't fathom what would cause that. What happens if
you go ahead and let it burn the files to CD, just once. Will they go away?
I would also play around with the shortcut properties, and renaming files,
etc. What about uninstalling that SCSI card?

Don't think the SCSI card has anything to do with it -- I only have one
machine with SCSI but four machines with the exact same problem.
Can't burn the files to CD because one of them is pagefile.sys (greater
than 700 MB in and of itself) , another on is System Volume Information, and
another one is Recycler (e.g. the recycle bin). Those three are hidden
system files and active, so Windows won't allow me to do anything with them.

As I mull it over I am wondering if it is related to Roxio EZ CD/DVD
Creatro 6 -- the only thing these four machines have in common is Windows XP
Pro, CD burners, and Roxio. I don't believe it is a hardware issue -- four
different mother boards, four different burners (the one for my lapatop is
external USB v.2).

So it has to be either Microsoft's implementation of Roxio's software
in Windows XP, or Roxio Creator 6.

I would say that Roxio is a pretty good bet, though I haven't heard of this
issue before.

Patty:

When I put a blank CD in the burner, it is the Microsoft Wizard (not
Roxio) that pops up wanting to write files to CD, so I'm at a loss.

On the machine I just built, I moved the pagefile from C:\ to D:\ (RAID
array) before I noticed that C:\pagefile.sys is trapped in the CD Burning
folder. Since C:\pagefile.sys now represents 786,432 kb of unusable space,
I am going to blow it away and start fresh. Then I will see who is putting
the files there -- Microsoft or Roxio.

I'll let you know what I learn...
