Files & Settings Transfer

I am trying to move files and settings from an old Windows ME computer with
no ethernet adapter to a new XP box with ethernet and USB ports but no
serial port. Both have USB ports. Can I do transfer the files and settings
using a CD? Both boxes do have CDs.

Thanks

Does that mean I can't transfer the email accounts, address book, etc? Once
I have the USB to USB cable how do I proceed? I looked at the File and
Transfer Wizard and find no mention of the USB to USB transfer.

Thanks for your help.

You might instead consider trying Laplink's PCmover, which I believe will do
this. Theoretically it is supposed to be able to move both the files AND
the settings, even to a newer operating system.

Don't be mislead by thecreator's statement since the FAST utility does not
transfer any settings that would be harmful to the OS.

See this link for detailed info about this utility:

Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
http://winsupportcenter.com/win5/a/fast.htm

You'll note in the article that if both systems are USB capable, a simple USB
flash drive can be used effectively.

Make sure you have the latest version of the FAST utility. The above article has
info and resources to obtain the latest.

Good luck!

Hi Rick,

Nope, you can use the same E-mail Store Folders that you used in Windows
ME for Windows XP, without batting an eyelash. I dual-boot between Windows
ME and Windows XP, using the same Store Folder for each operating system,
since Outlook Express is used in both operating systems.

Click All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Files and Settings
Transfer Wizard

You need to create a CD from the File and Settings Transfer Wizard. Do
it from XP.

Open Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. Click Next. Make sure that New
Computer is dotted and click Next. Dot I already have a Wizard Disk. and
click Next. Click Next. A USB Cable is known as a Universal Serial Bus
Cable.

Drive Letter:\Documents and Settings\UserID\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{22996606-F28B-4A64-A88B-6370D46B6DE0}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express

That is where the Outlook Express Store Folders are located. Local
Settings is a Hidden Folder, which you need to unhide to check the finished
work, using Folder Options and click View.

Buy a thumb drive; they're cheaper than a USB transfer cable and you can
use repeatedly for transferring files, music, etc. to other machines, or
just archiving the same.
