Files appear twice when searching in Explorer

When I search for all my Word documents, 478 results appear, but I only have
239. Each real file has a paired search result that is from an old file
location. I used to store the file in such location but I moved it. I did
this by moving a high-level folder, i.e. I changed the path of each of the
239 files by moving the high level folder. I wonder if this problem has
something to do with "My Documents" being a special folder. In any case, when
I click on each paired file, Windows complains that it cannot find the file.
That's because I moved it. But why is it still finding it? It feels like my
Explorer folder structure has lost integrity and that there are pointers to
the old locations that were not deleted during the move.

Hi, Keith.

There is no "My Documents" folder in Vista. But there is a "My Documents"
junction that simply points to the new location in
C:\Users\{username}\Documents. The junction is maintained for the benefit
of legacy programs that have not yet been revised for the new Vista scheme.

So you are seeing each file once in its actual location (C:\Users...) and
again in the "cross-reference" in the My Documents junction.

Perhaps Vista's housekeeping just hasn't yet caught up with your move -
which it DID NOT anticipate. You may need to right-click on Documents, then
click Properties | Location | Restore Default to get your documents back to
where Vista expects to find them. (I haven't done this little maneuver, so
I can't tell you how - or how well - it works.)

I had read about junctions in the Windows Vista Inside Out book. To fix this
problem, I copied the files in Documents to a new Documents2 folder. Then I
repointed to that location, then I repointed back to Documents. Some of those
steps may not have been necessary, but it worked. We are back to normal now.
Thanks.

I have a lot of important messages in Windows mail which I want to move to My
Documents for stroage and editing.

Apart from cutting and pasting, is there a way to move complete folders?

I know that I am replying to another thread, but the question box did not
respond.

Hi Marilyn,

In Windows Mail, go to Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance. Select Store
Folder. This will bring up a box showing the current location of your
Message Store. Select Change, and you can then browse to where you want the
Message Store located.

You can export email...
File - Export - Messages - Microsoft Windows Mail
select an *empty* folder in Documents (My Documents is not a valid folder in
Vista).
select which folder you wish to export
export

This *copies* the emails, it does not remove the originals from Windows
Mail.

Try using Windows Mail to access these newsgroups, and you won't have the
problems you do with the web interface.

I have tried again and this time I appear to have it sorted, but it took
nearly three minutes to move the folders. This is ridiculous. I am only
trying to move my own post into my own folders. Why do I have to go through
all this rigmarole?

Why cannot I coppy/cut and paste?
