Files and folders starting with QU vanish!

Hi folks.
Very strange problem here... I was happily using the internet with my
Quickbooks accounting software running in the background when I got a blue
screen ("a problem has been detected and your computer has been shut
down..."). Looking through the screen the cause was a .sys file starting with
cc, not sure exactly what the filename was though. I have Norton IS 2004
running on this PC, so I'm guessing that the cc?.sys file is a norton file.
I rebooted in safe mode, then rebooted again. Everything seemed ok, until I
discovered that Quickbooks had vanished from my PC. I wasnt too concerned
because I still had the data files. I ran a scandisk, no errors. So I
attempted to re-install the App and received an access denied message.
No here's the strange bit - If I put the disk in another PC, I can seem the
folders just fine. In fact if I try to access them from within DOS, although
I cannot see the folders even with the /ah switch, if I type use the CD
command (e.g. "cd quickbooks pro") then I can get into the folder.
I also discovered that a folder called Queensland had vanished, but that was
still accessible with the disk in another PC.
Any thoughts? I've removed all the AV, the last 3 months of Windows updates,
re-applied SP2 and all the security updates. Now I have a problem
re-installing the AV software but thats probably just Norton for you... :)

Please look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Warning
and Error Reports over the last 2 days use and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry. There's nothing out of the ordinary in the logs at all... just the
usual DCOM errors that I always seem to get and the memory dump
notifications. I'll grab copies anyway and post them later on.

Simon.

Anything other than Information Reports are "out of the ordinary". All
reports
provide factual information. Post your copies and we can try to help!

Next time write down that information so you can include the complete error
message part of the blue screen in your message.
