Filename NTUSER.DAT

256 Kb .DAT file apparently interferes with Outlook Express e-mail logon.
Message says the file is in use by another user. File is located in two
places:
1) C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\NTUSER.DAT
2) C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\NTUSER.DAT

Exactly why requires this file?
What would happen if I delete it?

Thank you,

It is probably this one. You may get a handle on the message with Process
Explorer.
2) C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\NTUSER.DAT

These are registry hives. Do not delete them.
What would happen if I delete it?
Very very very bad things. So bad that your problem with Outlook Express,
serious though it is, will seem inconsequential.

I advise you to take the computer to a qualified repair shop (not best buy
or compusa) to get the problem resolved.

Very very very bad things.

Maybe. If the file size is only 256K, then those files are not being
used for the OP's profile. It is strange that he has not found his own
NTUSER.DAT file.
