~file

Every no and then an icon appears on my desktop. There
seems to be no pattern to when it appears. It is not a
shortcut but a file on the desk top. When I right-click
the icon and select properties I'm informed that the file
type is "file" and the description is " ~ " it's size is
about 175kb and it's attributes - archive. My question
is, what the heck are these things and is it okay the
delete them?
