on startup when desktop appears I also get a popup from windows saying it
cannot find "C:\progra~1\softwa~1\soproc.exe" make sure you typed the name
correctly and retry. I'm at a loss of what it is and/or how to get rid of
it, which is what I want to do....help please

Hi

Have a look in msconfig to see if that file is referenced anywhere. If it
is, uncheck it, and then reboot your system.

This file is usually part of a spyware program by Software Online. Have you
recently ran an anti-spyware scanner? It may have removed the program but
not the registry entry that loads it. Run msconfig and look for this entry.
Take out the tick beside it and then let the computer reboot when prompted.
If you haven't run an anti-spyware scanner then you should do so. You may be
infected. Here's a couple of free ones.
