File Transfer from Computer to Computer

I recently purchased a new computer and I wanted to
transfer some files from my old computer to my new one. I
had heard that there was a way to do this using Windows
XP. I heard you can buy some kind of cable and attach the
2 computers together and then do some sort of file
transfer. Can you tell me if this can be done and if so
how?

Burn them to CD/DVD..
Copy them to a USB thumb drive or other USB drive...
Connect them up with a crossover network cable if they both have network
cards..
Connect them up with a hub or switch if you can do that..

Buy something like this:
