File time stamp changes on copy

In XP, when I copy a file (e.g. to a CD),
the created date/time and the changed date/time
are set to today.
I wish to keep the date/time unchanged as
long as it is just a copy operation.
How can that be achieved?

Christian

It can't. The MODIFIED date will be updated to the current date; the
CREATED date will remain unchanged. Unfortunately, XP displays only the
MODIFIED date by default. You can see the CREATED date in the properties
dialog. Also, within Explorer, you _CAN_ cause the CREATED date (and many
other things too) to be displayed (in the details view) by right-clicking
on the header row (name|size|Type|...) and "checking" the appropriate item
to add that column to the display. Many people are unaware of this
explorer feature.

re: copying to CD's. _SOME_ CD writing tools (ie, Nero) do allow you to
place the files into the CD-Compilation without altering the dates
whatsoever, but that's a feature of the specific tool; XP always updates
the modified date when copying a file.

Hum. I mis-spoke:

when you copy a file, the CREATED date gets set to the current date/time,
the MODIFIED date remains unchanged (which means it displays as modified
before it was created - hum!?). I got it backwards.

everything else I said checks out tho (must be the grog).
