File sharing

I am trying to tighten up the security on my network, and not really sure
what I’m doing. I have a desktop computer that is using XP Pro and a laptop
with XP home edition. I use the desktop to store all of my data files, and
for the most part I work from the laptop. I have turned off simple file
sharing on my shared drive, and when I go to the sharing tab and click
permissions I only see the desktop, I would think I would need to add the
laptop with my login. Prior to turning off the simple file sharing
everything worked fine.
Also when I now try to access the shared drive from the laptop I get the
error it is not accessible access denied.

Create an identical user account/password on both machines. Make sure
that you only have one firewall running on each machine (not the
Windows Firewall and a third-party one) and that all firewalls are
properly configured to allow the lan as trusted. Here is an excellent
troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna which will pinpoint the problem
area(s):

Thanks for the reply
I discovered this morning that I had a typo on my workgroup. Everything
appears to work fine
