File Sharing Windows 98

I will consider all your recommendations. I will disable the Personal
firewall that comes with PC-Cillin 2004. By the way, why would somebody
suggests on using NetBEUI in a network when it is not necessary? I have even
came across a website suggesting to install the 3 protocols on a network. So,
as I started installing my network I would always do that.

Arnold,

on the web you can find everything recommended. There are good
and bad recommendations.

The point behind recommending a second transport protocol is
actually a bit tricky. Why people recommend NetBEUI instead of
the included IPX protocol eludes me entirely, but the reason why
a second protocol is recommended is this.

Somebody had problems with TCP/IP, couldn't get it to work on
the LAN. So he tried to install IPX on top, and that worked.
Instead of solving the problem, the person now recommends a
crude workaround.

There is another point to the second protocol. In some very
specific situations it does actually make sense to install a
different transport protocol, namely when you get IP addresses
from your ISP that are not in the same reserved subnet. In that
case installing IPX is one way out of the problem.

Yet another is that some older network games run only on IPX.

But the MVPs at least agree that installing a second transport
protocol is normally not recommendable and certainly not
necessary for most installations.

Dear Hans-Georg,

Well I am now informed of the basics of networking. I have already applied
your recommendations and I think it is doing well. I am no longer
experiencing lags on network connections especially on LAN and internet
gaming.

Thanks and warmest regards,

Arnold Lamberte

I don't know if this thread still active, but it seem to closely reflect my
own problem.
I have:
-a Win 98 SE computer (can't really upgrade it, very old pentium II
processor);
-a D-Link router(connected to previous via ethernet cable)
-a new computer with XP SP2 and a UBS wireless adapter.
The wireless internet connection works fine, problem is with file and
printer sharing between the two computers. I 've been thru all the checks
mentionned in the previous posts (TCP/IP, simpe file sharing enabled, etc)
and here's where I am:

The XP computer can «see» the W-98 computer on the network, but when I Try
to access it, I get a message about not having sufficient privilege and
checking with my admin. (eg, me).

So, what's next?

Youves,

Why not create your own new thread? Use a descriptive Subject, and folks will
be able to find your article, and any replies, much easier.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
