File sharing one-way-only on 1 pc of 4

M

Michael 23

I have a LAN consisting of 2 wired pcs and 2 wireless,
all running win XP.
They are all on the same workgroup, and all sharing an internet
connection
through a wireless router.
All of the machines can read and write files to and from each-other,
except for one of the wired pc's (which happens to be my main,
all-day-every-day pc).
This one 'sees itself' on the network, with shared files appearing
under 'my network places' right alongside the shared folders on all the
other machines... but none of the others can access its shared folders.

When browsing to "Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network >
<workgroupName>" on the other computers, the machine in question is on
the list as a member of the workgroup... but trying to access its files
brings up the standard error: "<location> is not accesible. You might
not have permission blah blah..."

I have had this problem for as long as I can remember, but have ignored
it, until now... I would really like to be able to work on my office
files using the laptop from other locations in the house.
I don't have windows firewall running on this pc, and have tried a
number of other solutions gleaned from reading past threads in this
group, but to no avail.

Can anyone offer some fresh suggestions, or steer me in the right
direction?

( thanks in advance )

Michael,

What's the entire message?
You might not have permission blah blah...
The blah blah part might be useful.

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. There are several
other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem. Read this
article with an open mind.

Or look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download

Hmmm....
I think this is all fouled up on my machine:

My windows firewall service is stopped, and I cannot restart it, due to
some other unnamed service being stopped, which it apparently relies
on.

When I go to the list of services and try to manually start the Windows
Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing service, I get an error saying
"Could not start the Windows Firewall / Internet Connection Sharing
service... Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has
been marked for deletion"

OOPS what could I have done? Too bad it doesnt say 'which' dependent
service!

any ideas here? How can I force-restart the firewall service?
AND - could this be related to the problem I am having with viewing
files on this pc?

Michael,

Issue with Firewall could be with corrupted TCP/Ip. Reset the Winsock and
then reinstall TCP/IP by following this prcoedure:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. In Registry Editor, locate the following keys, right-click each key, and
then click Delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
4. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Note Restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys. Doing so causes
the Windows XP operating system to create new shell entries for those two
keys. If you do not restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys,
the next step does not work correctly.
Step 2: Install TCP/IP
1. Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
2. Click Install.
3. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
4. Click Have Disk.
5. Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
6. On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and
then click OK.
7. Restart the computer.

Comming to Workgroup Issue, check whether guest account is enabled and
Configure the Computer Browser service startup type to Manual.

Hope this would help you in resolving the issue.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions/feedback.

Regards,
Bala

Michael,

You can look at dependencies from the Services Wizard.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/services-running-on-your-computer.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/services-running-on-your-computer.html

Start by running the Network Setup Wizard again. If the problem is with a
networking service or component, this may reset the problem.

If that doesn't help, look at LSP / Winsock / TCP/IP corruption.

Thanks Chuck... I will try this.
Always hesitant to change registry settings, so I will check out your
option first.
( thanks also to Bala)

I know it has been weeks, but I am still on this.
nothing has worked... and I have traced the problem even further - I
cannot start the firewall OR the security center service. I also cannot
see dependent services, because of yet another error , "class not
registered". Yikes.
Maybe I am at the point where giving up and just living with it makes
more sense than trying to fix it any further.
I have had a few people suggest a winXP reinstall, but I would rather
just keep my machine how it is than mess with *that* can of worms.

One word: aaaaaaargh!
