File sharing between XP machines problem

S

someonesomewhere

I have a home network, a total of four machines, all running XP Pro
SP2. They all work fine except this most recent problem.

On one of the machines I changed the D drive from FAT32 to NTFS using
the XP conversion tool. All went fine but now one of the other
machines is having issues with access to the NTFS D drive. What is
strange is that it can access the root of the NTFS drive but gets the
no access allowed, you may not have permissions message when trying to
get at any of the folders on the NTFS drive. The machine with the D
drive in question can access the drives on the other machine without
issues.

I'm kind of at a loss with this as it worked before the conversion to
NTFS.

Any suggestions.

Thanks

I want to add to this, I just checked one of the other machines and it
also CANNOT access the NTFS drive. The strange thing is, as I said
before, the root of the drive is accessable but I can also access the
AGENT folder and subfolders under it for some reason. But, none of the
other folders.

I just tried unsharing the drive and reshareing it again but still no
help. Both of the other machines I checked are failing to access the
NTFS drive the same way. I even ran the network setup wizzard on one
of them to see if it could fix the problem It did not.

The local filesystem on the computer has nothing to do with the ability to
access shares over the network - EXCEPT - NTFS partitions have both share
permissions and file permissions. Likely, this is a file permissions
problem. On the security tab, make sure the accounts you are using have
permissions to at least read and execute on the folders in question. If you
can acccess the root of the drive, look to see if the permissions on the
folders underneath match the permissions on the root. Normally,
subdirectories inherit permissions from the parent, although that can be
disabled with a single click.
