File recovery software

I've used the file recovery program without great success. Some times it
works, other times I get an "access violation" error. However, I've used the
Smart Recovery program and it works well.

Yes, same here.

I have tried it today only 4 times to test it and 2 times had the violation
error.

I will try your suggestion

OK, maybe I should mention the Smart Recovery program only works for smart
media, the type used by digital cameras.

I find also that File Inspector will run properly at times, but mostly not.

There is another program called Drive Rescue which I find works better. It
seems to be another version of File Inspector, or more likely, File
Inspector is a version of Drive Rescue, but it does seems to run reliably.

Yes that sounds right - it works fine on my CF cards but not on the large
harddrives.

other similar software you would recommend.

Do not use the PC more than absolute nescessary so that deleted files are
not overwritten.

So, on another PC, download Resotration on one of the following links:
http://hccweb1.bai.ne.jp/~hcj58401/
http://ftp.pcworld.com/pub/new/utilities/file_management/REST2514.EXE
http://www.collina.us/files/REST2514.htm

REST2514.EXE 193 KB

Put the program on a floppy or USB removeable disk, and run the program
from there, and also undelete to the removeable disk:

Restoration
Restore files which are deleted from the recycle bin by mistake.

Windows XP

Any comment on it's ability or other similar software you would recommend.

The program indeed has some acces violation issues. However, if it doesn't
it is one of the best and easiest progrograms out there, putting many
commecially aviable tools to shame.

Who just discoverd he has to instal OE-quotefix yet (after reinstalling his

I have used a program called "Restoration", Japanese, if I remember
correctly, works very well. I have used it a few times with success.
No longer supported...a few years old, but stable.

Potential solution to access violation error

I discovered that the access violation error seems to pop up when I select more than one file or folder under the root directory to "Save To" at once (and the error seems to pop up right after it's done recovering the first selected item and is about to move onto the next). If you're experiencing this error, try only selecting one item to recover at a time, this worked for me (although it was a pain when I had ~20 folders in my root, each ~10GB to recover). Good luck,

H
