File permissions keep resetting

Steve

Got a very strange occurrance on my win2k server. Users
and myself (as admin) sometimes cannot access a file or
directory. Keep getting the usual "Access Denied" prompt.
I have to go to that directory and take ownership, add
perms again, and then click to propagate down.
This has been happeing for about 2 days now.
Has anyone seen this before?

Steve, I don't know if this will help you.

I noticed the same thing with an NT4 server on an NTFS
partition. I found that the permission database gets
corrupted and that an <unknown> entity now has permission
in one or more folders. The entity was a valid group whose
name or reference was corrupted.

After I rigorously went through every folder on the NTFS
partition and corrected the problem (only a few had the
error) the problem went away. Like you, I took ownership
of all folders, but that was only a temporary fix. I never
had this problem on a FAT partition. Did this problem
propagte to NTFS5?

Good luck.
