File Order Problem

Hey, all.

I've experienced this before, but I don't recall what I did to fix it:

when I use any program to open a file, the files are listed in mod order,
but reverse. I've gone to "Arrange Icons By..." and changed it to "Names;"
however, that only works for the moment I have the open screen open and for
that particular file. When I use Explorer, all files are listed properly by
name.

Thanks for the help!

Ctrl + Close button
Sets the system default settings, mainly sort order. Icon style is not affected

Ctrl+close... as in ctrl+w? And do I do that when I have the Open File box
open? If so, it's not working so far. :-/

lol! Yeah... a minute ago (before seeing this mssg) I was about to save a
file, and I though, "I wonder if he meant the X button as close?"

Thanks for the help, man!!

I'm having the same problem as Leprakawn. In all my dialog boxes - Open,
Save, Import - the folders and files are listed in descending alpha order.
I'd like them in ascending order. I've tried the Control + Close (X button)
in a folder window with a list or detail view in Ascending order but it
doesn't seem to change the dialog box default. Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Steve

Hi Guys,

had the same problem as you are experiencing.

Managed to find this thread before I got so annoyed and reinstalled XP.

If you open the 'Open' dialog from in a program,

Right click in the dialog box and got to 'arrange' and then 'name'

the icons should then be sorted 'a to z'

then hold down 'Ctrl' and click the 'X' in the top corner of the dialog box.

This will then set that as the default of something like that.

But its worked and much happier now.

Hope that helps

Thank you very much for explaining it clearly. Must be one of those settings
that get changed by a keystroke without realizing it.

I'm having the same problem after reinstalling XP. I've followed the steps
outlined in this thread without success. it fixes the order once I sort,
then I click cntrl x... the window closes. However when I reopen the files
are sorted in reverse order again. Any suggestions?

Try doing FILE->Close instead of ctrl-x.
At least once. Normally FILE and then the exit or close command saves
settings on the way out, rather than the X in the upper right corner of
a window.
