file or directory corrupted or unreadable

I'm using a compaq evon800c with windows xp pro. I have been using a maxtor one touch external hard drive on usb2.0 for approximately 8 months without any problems. Started up this morning and e: file or directory is corrupted or unreadable. The maxtor shows up in my computer but if I go to properties it shows solid blue pie. Help if you can.

Have you recently dropped the drive or got it near anything that could
be considered magnetic? It sounds like Windows is simply unable to read
the external drive, but it is weird that it would allow you to pull up
the properties and see that it is completely full. What filing system
are you using on each and is there anything you can think of that you
have done that might overwrite the bootsector of the external drive?
