File Open Dialogs - icons always sorted by "modified"

Two of our XP machines have developed a very annoying problem that whenever
you open a File Open dialog box from an application, the files and folders
are always sorted by Modified.

As our other machines do not do this, it must be controllable, but I cannot
find out how to change the settings. Can anyone help?

I realise I can do that, but the next time I go to open the window again, I
am back where I started - they are still sorted by Modified

And as we have other XP machines that do not exhibit this behaviour, there
must be a way of changing it.

Per David Candy:

Open a file folder in Explorer, sort how you want, and Ctrl + Close (X on title bar). This sets the global sort which on nearly anything but Open Dialog is overridden by other settings.

Not sure how that helps, since I only have the problem in the Open Dialog.
Do you know what other settings override the Explorer ones? And how I can
change them?

That helps because it changes the global setting for sort order to Name, which is what you want!!!!! Because that's what the Open dialog uses!!!

When a folder is viewed in explorer, the global setting will be overridden by a saved view, if one exists.

If not, explorer will then look to see if there is a default streams key for that folder type. If so, that will override the global sort.

So the global setting can be overridden for folders...

But the Open dialog ONLY uses the global sort, so that's why you want to change it.

I copied & pasted a direct quote...perhaps a comma and some emphasis would have helped :)
