FILE NAMES

What is a file that has a tilde (~) in the first position of the file name?
What creates it?

I have 98 files with files names such as ~$-6TH-4PH.doc. The ~$- are
replacing my first three letters of the file names. These temp files do not
go away when WORD is closed as the article you linked me to suggests. I
thought that they might be temp files created during the auto recovery
process. So, I attempted to open one of the files using the OPEN-Recover
function. All I received were boxes on my screen. The original files are
all missing for the file folder that they were originally stored in.

Can you give me some ideas as to how/why these files might have been
created? And, what I can do to fix them?
