file (MSWMM) fires up WMM but doesn't recognize file afterwards

This is for my daughter. She says it worked at school (XP), but when
we click on the file it fires up WMM, but shows only XXXXXX's in the
clip boxes? I've tried monkeying with the file suffix to no avail. She
tells me there are videos and stills in the clips. The files were from
a digital camera uploaded to the school computer, edited ( worked)
then copied to a jump drive and brought home. Please help me help her.

The .mswmm project file does not include your
source files...video clips, pictures, music, etc...
It merely records the path to the source files.
A recipe for a movie...as it were...

If you wish to edit the .mswmm file on a different
machine...you must have copies of the original
source files and they should be in the same
locations as on the creation machine.

Once the source files are available...open the
..mswmm in Movie Maker and right click the Red
Xs...with any luck...you should be able to browse
to the source files and re-establish the path.

WOW! That would explain it. I checked the file size. It was about 250
Kb. Much too small for several minutes of video and stills. I guess
she needs to find a way to drag those files home. The project is due
Tues. How is a kid (or an adult) supposed to know that (I know RTFM),
but that never works either.....by the way, no error message, just
X's. Thanks John.

That's right...you need the source files. And like
you say...the small file size of the .mswmm file
is a pretty good clue.

There wouldn't be an error because the file is
doing what it was intended to do. And the Red
Xs...are it's way of reporting that the files are
not available.

Seems to me the teacher should have instructed
the students on how to use Movie Maker if it is
used in a classroom.

Yeah, I wondered about that as well. Thanks for the info.
