File in use ??

Mike

I am using Access 2002, running on XP. I created a
database that is located on a network drive. It is
supposed to be used by several users at once.

The problem I am experiences recently, is if someone opens
it and either closes it or stays in it. The next person
that tries to use the database, gets the message:

Could not use 'Z:\database.mdb'; file already in use.

Why does this happen? What do I need to do to not get
this error?

Thanks
Mike

Do you have any clients opening the database exclusively?
Steps to check:
1) Open the z:\database.mdb
2) Go to >Tools >Options then click the Advanced tab
3) Verify that the Open Database Default Mode radio button IS NOT on exclusive.
4) Verify you have the correct record locking scheme selected located on this very tab
Reply with your current settings and if this fixes it or not.
Good Luck.

I made sure when I created this database that the Default
Open mode was shared. Which confusing me why I am getting
that message at times.

Check to make sure that it STILL IS set as Shared. Someone may have inadvertently changed it on the Tables side of the database. And I would verify what type of locking scheme you have setup on the records. Also after re-reading your original post. Your problem may not be with your database but with the sharing/user permissions setup on the server itself
BTW - is this database an .ade/.mde? (are the tables separate from the program?)
