"~" file has appeared on desktop

Greetings !
For some strange reason a file named "~" is appearing on my desktop. It is
not an executable file however when I open it it contains the line "MAIN
IDENTITY'S CONTACTS" along with a list of the last people I've e-mailed.
There's lots of other garbage but it looks like it's a tracker of some sort.
I've never had this before and according to my anti-virus scans my system is
clean. Any help in figuring this out is appreciated.

For some strange reason a file named "~" is appearing on my desktop.

Nothing to worry about its a glitch caused by a Microsoft patch and is
created when you edit/add/delete contacts in your address book. As you have
spotted it is just a copy of your address book that would normally be
deleted when you close the address book but for some reason this patch
stopped that happening and it appears on your desktop . Just delete it
