file extension from .doc to .htm

I created 5 Word docs with an explicit .doc extension, closed them, left them
sitting on the desktop. Next morning they were gone. Google can't find them
and I cannot find them manually. I did find 5 html shortcuts with the same
file names and the doc extension. The shortcuts are dead (lead to no
documents). The html shortcuts are only 4k and unlikely to be the docs, but
I can't open them with Word or Explorer to find out. Changing the extension
manually to .htm or .html doesn't work either. I'm really flummoxed by this
one.

Thanks for any ideas.....

Thank God, I thought I was losing it. Happened to me on Thursday with
Notepad. Saved and closed on the desktop. When I went to look for it a
few minutes later it wasn't there. "Recently Used" had a shortcut to it
but couldn't find it. Tried file recovery software, not anywhere on the
system. Fortunately for me it was still fresh in my head so I could
duplicate the file from memory. Not sure what to do until this
concern/issue/problem is resolved. (MS hardly ever calls them what they
are: BUGS!)

Russell
