File Explorer resets everything!!!

A

Windows XP home, with all updates, so it is just Windows XP.

In the last few months a new thing has been happening:

Once in a while, when I close a file explorer window, it causes the
desktop to redraw: all the icons disappear, then they come back in
generic icon mode, then the gradually are redrawn with the particular
icon graphic each one used to have. After several seconds of all
this, the desktop looks normal, again.

This may happen once every 5 or 6 times I close a file explorer
window.

What gets wearing is that often the tray has to reload, and not all
the tray icons reappear.

Also, the reset means that the files I've downloaded to my basic
folder are no longer at the end of the list, but are buried in the
middle because they've been resorted -- and I don't always know the
title of the file.

Any more suggestions????

Thanks,
Alan

I read on here to make icons reappear quicker to go to- folder options/view &
uncheck the box that says "Automatically search for network folders and
printers"
Worked for me.-Gary

Just tried that, and found that option was not checked.

When I closed the control panel everything reset itself again.
Is that irony????

Only a suggestion on the file sorting issue. After Explorer re-starts (for
whatever reason), just sort by date decending. That should put all of the
latest d/l's at the top.

Hi,
a) Do you installed video codecs or any pak of them ? No.....

b) check your system for virus/spywares/bugs/
Weekly checks are automatic, both for viruses and for spyware stuff.

It means go to that website and scroll down to Line 157. Click the "Prevent automatic folder and icon refresh" to download the file. Double click the downloaded file and confirm the registry merge.

I just happened across this thread and followed it, and I don't understand how
the cited web site works. When I click on an item, let's say 157, no dl occurs,
it just opens a new page with the code listed. On other links, the save option
does work. Is it me or is there a problem on the site?

Right-click on the file and choose "Save As". It might also say "Save
Target As". Save the file as desired (Desktop is always a good choice
for finding things you've downloaded). Since it's just text, it will
download very quickly. Then double-click the file you downloaded to
merge into the registry.

Left click works OK here to bring up the download box? Try the right click fix that Malke described.

When I double-click on it, I get another page with two lines of
registry entries -- at least that's what they look like.

How do I use those?

Thanks!

I did that, and I think it applied itself. I've closed several
explorer windows since, and it seems stable.

Oddly, after I rebooted, Norton told me that email scanning was
turned off, so I turned it back on. . . .

It sounds like you have "Edit" as the default action set for registry files.

Right click the downloaded file and select "Merge" from the pop up menu. Confirm the merge.

It is best to leave Norton email scanning disabled. It provides no additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary.

Here is a post from MVP Robear Dyer on the subject. Click the link to see the full article.

<quote>
Disabling email protection does not leave you vulnerable to viruses and
malicious software in email. It is a separate layer of protection in
addition to Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect scans any incoming files, including
email, as they are saved to your hard drive. As long as you keep your virus
definitions up to date with LiveUpdate, and keep Auto-Protect enabled and
set to scan files as they are created or downloaded, your system is fully
protected.

Whatever I did seemed to work.

When I used to make machines I always set them up that way to keep customers
from accidentally screwing up their machines.
