File Associations

I have Vista and Office 2007 and I have a question about file associations.
For my .xlsx files it shows the default as Microsoft Offie Excel. I assume
that is Excel 2007, which I don't want. I want to change it to Excel 97-2003
so all my Excel documents will open in that. So I try to change the program
by clicking on the Change program... button and the only program there is
Microsoft Office Excel. I'm not given the option to change it to 97-2003. I
guess I'm stuck now...can anyone help me?

That's because Excel 97-2003 won't open xlsx documents. You need to open
them in Excel 2007 and do Save-As and save them in 97-2003 format.

They can if you have the office format compatibility pack:

Office 2003 can load an add-on to read xlsx files. When you try to open the
file, it will offer to install the add-on, assuming you have not disabled
the update feature in Office 2003. If you prefer to not use update, you can
go to the Office site and download the add-on.

That sounds like something that might work. Let me explain what the problem
is and maybe you could tell me what you think -- Certain reports and letters
in our online case management system are designed to call Excel inside a
browser window. Office 2007 file types called by our system open the actual
Excel
application instead of opening in a browser window. While this doesn't
cause problems on the first level of a report, it does cause an issue with
report drill downs. Our reports have several levels of drilldowns. Because
it's calling Excel instead of Internet Explorer, if you try to drill down to
the second level, our system thinks you're not logged in and you get an error
message saying that you must be logged into view that page. That's my problem
and that's what I'm trying to find an answer to.

It's possible to save an xlsx file as the xls file. maybe doing that will
let IE drill down to the second level. Otherwise, I think you are going to
need Office 2007 to do it.
