File As won't show unless I input a company

G

Guest

Since last week, File As in the contacts section will only populate with the
filing options if I input a Company which is not always applicable.

This means the name is filed under the company and I do not get the Last
Name, First Name or First Name Last Name options.

I can get round this by clicking on Full Name, but have never had to do this
is the past, the File As list had populated without me having to do this in
the past.

This also means that when right-clicking and selecting Add Contact on a
received email, I can't click save straight away because it tells me there is
nothing in the File As option.

If it helps, when clicking on Full Name when there is nothing in the File As
box, the fulll name entered appears in the Title Field which is presumably
why this is happening.

You forgot even to state the format you specified for the File As... field.
That would be essential information to have. So would your Outlook version.
I suspect Outlook is only doing what you've told it to.

You can try the following to find out where the problem is:

1. Run the "Detect- and Repair"- function under "Help" (please set no
checkboxes)
2. Create a new profile in the control panel by "mail" and try it
first with a new pst-file
3. Run "scanpst.exe" to repair your pst-file

If you want simply to refresh the "File As" field you can use the
tool:

"ChangeNames" (http://www.marchert.de/software.html#cn)

I'm using Outlook 2003 (fully patched)........I tried the Detect and Repair
and that didn't work.

I can't state the format I specified for the File As field as the File As
field is empty and when I click on the arrow to expand the list of options I
just get a empty box. Normally I use FirstName LastName

It only seems to happen to contacts who send me Plain Text emails.

I don't understand why you think The File As... field has anything to do
with messages that you received. It applies only to Contacts that you
create, not messages.

Hi,

I know the File As only relates to Contacts, it's just that this problem
occurs when right-clicking on the sender's name/email address to add them to
the contacts and only when the email sent is in plain-text format. The File
As options work fine using this method when the email sent isn't plain-text.

Not an Outlook issue. The File As.. field can only be populated correctly
for Contacts you create in Outlook. When you import Contacts or try to
create them programmatically, the File As.. field will most likely not have
the name elements it needs to derive that field correctly and you must
adjust it for yourself.

But I am creating contacts in Outlook...........

I've just had the situation arise in different situation.........Outlook is
fully patched (got all patches released today installed)

I go to enter a new Contact manually (i.e. selecting Contact from the New...
drop down list) and when I put the name in it doesn't populate the File As
field like you would expect.

When clicking on Full Name... it brings up the box and the whole name is in
the Title field. Even typing in "Mr Anon Ymous" as the name doesn't split the
name up correctly.

There might as well not be a File As... option.
