~ file appears on desktop

I occassionally get a new file showing up on my desktop.
All it says under the icon is ~. When I try to open it, I
can't.

Does anyone have any leads on this problem?

It's a glitch in the new OE 6 Service Pack. It appears every time you change
something in your address book. The ~ file is a copy of your address book.
It's harmless and you can delete it.

It may be a glitch; and you can delete it, but it comes back; again and again and again. It is an annoyance to me; I thought it was a virus or trojan horse at first.
