field codes - working backward

Hi,

I am working with a template that was developed way before my time at my
company. It is full of very handy field codes, but I do not always know where
they pull from. In some cases, I have figured it out by trial and error -
i.e. I change something here and it changes over there, but there are still
several that I cannot figure out.

When I right-click on the field code and click 'Edit field code' I get
information but do not know how to interpret it. Is that where the answer is?

Is there an easier way to figure this out?
Thanks,
Tara Allen

What are some of these field codes? BTW, you can display all the codes by
pressing Alt+F9.

Well, it's a training guide template, so the field codes might be headers
that pull from the document properties, activity numbers that pull from the
lesson number, or caption numbers that increment by one. Here is one that's a
caption number: {STYLEREF 1 \s } {SEQ Table \ ^ARABIC \s 1 }. How would I
know where that is pulling from just by looking at it?

Thanks!

That one's a table caption that includes the chapter number, which is
derived from Heading 1. The numbering is arabic, starting at 1 (and will
restart at 1 every time the "chapter number" increments). I don't really
understand what you mean by "where it's pulling from." Do you understand the
use of SEQ and STYLREF fields?

apparently I do not. I guess I need to do some reading up on this. Thanks for
your help.

In this particular instance, you don't really need to, since Word creates
the caption automatically, but this knowledge can be helpful in
troubleshooting misbehaving captions.
