Few questions about update version..

So, the installation of the upgrade version needs to be started under a
previous windows installation.. I have a few questions about that:

If I start that under XP, does that XP version needs to be activated before
the vista installation starts? Can I start the installation under win 2000
too? If yes, since Windows 2000 doesn't have activation, will it load up a
custom activation scheme or something?

Can I install the upgrade version as much often as I want? Let's say, I got
a new PC, to install vista upgrade I need to install XP first, and activate
it, right? But I heard that vista devalues the previous XP key, when you
upgrade.. how will XP then activate? And I can install Vista upgrade only
over a activated xp copy, right?

Another problem: What if I can't install XP or win2000 on the new computer,
because I don't have the sata driver for xp or win2k? That scenario could
happen in a few years, when vendors begin stop supporting XP:

I buy a mainboard, HD etc. but it doesn't come with xp drivers, just Vista
drivers. Since vista upgrade can be installed only over a existing windows
installation, I am fu***d, because I don't have the sata drivers to install
XP!

What to do then?

You actually don't need to install XP first when using an upgrade DVD. The
whole upgrade situation is a complete mess.

Yes with XP it has to be activated and genuine. Windows 2000 just has to be
installed.

An upgrade version can be reinstalled as many times as you want and moved to
a different machine, as long as it's only installed on one device at any one
time. When an upgrade version of Vista is installed you cannot
independently install the XP or Windows 2k license. Remove Vista and you
can, by the license, then install XP. How that's handled by the MS
activation servers we don't know yet. The point is this, only one can be
installed at any time, the upgrade version of Vista, or the qualifying OS.

There is a published work around on how to install the Vista upgrade without
the qualifying OS installed. Use at your own risk. Here is one link on it.

To avoid all these issues get a full, retail version of Vista

Not true, yes XP has to be genuine but it does not have to be activated.
That is how I did my install, formated drive, installed XP (with out
activating) and
then I did the Vista install.
