Fed up with NAV, how about McAfee?

P

I'm fed up with NAV's subscription problems.

(I installed a trial version of Norton Internet Security and when it
expired, the NAV subscription expired prematurely with it. There is no
on-line help for this problem and Norton's customer service can't be
reached: "due to call volume, please call another time". This is the x-th
time that I had premature subscription expiry problems, just venting!)

I'm thinking of changing to McAfee, but before I go out and buy, are there
any problems that I should be aware of? I would appreciate any comments and
words of advice.

I don't like the Security Center which gets installed with it. It's like
a shareware nag screen. A link you may find interesting, though:
http://software.mcafee.com/lcas/ The only genuine information required is
an email address.

Microsoft is offering a free one-year trial of eTrust AV:

Hi Pete,

I never liked NAV or McAfee very much (I've used both in the past),
so if you're really looking for an *improvement*, I would recommend
having a look at NOD32 instead:

http://www.nod32.com/

A few years ago, I tried several different anti-virus applications
(looking for something to replace McAfee), and finally decided upon
NOD32. I've been very happy with it ever since. It's fast, accurate,
and light on system resources. I've never noticed any instability or
conflicts with other programs either.

The only virus I ever had was when I was using McAfee, but every AV
has probably let a virus or two through at one time or another. I
began changing from Norton when they went to the activation scam. I am
using NOD32 with everything activated and Avast for outgoing E-Mail
scanning.

Send Symantec an email.
MS is also offering a free ,1yr AntiVirus/Firewall combo.
You can download it from their website or order the MS Critical Updates CD
and it comes with the other CD for the antivirus\firewall CD also.
Believe it or not, the MS CD is not only free, but so is the shipping and
handling.

I switched all of my systems to F-Prot except my E-mail box that I'm still
running NAV on. F-Prot costs $29.00 USD for a year's subscription.

Free updates are released almost daily and free Version updates come out
on a regular basis and you get notified and can D/L them when you check
for updates.

Best of all, you can run F-Prot on all of your PERSONAL PCs on the same
license.

I back up F-Prot with other on demand AV scanner programs plus I run
AdAware and SpyBot 1.3 on a regular basis.
