So many applications create a Startup Item to check for updates. Windows
should create an Update Manager to consolidate this information. It should
have an API for installation programs to use. Creating an entry would
require the location on the local system that contains the installed versions
of all components, the location on the Internet where the latest versions of
the components can be found and the location of a program on the local system
that is run if a newer version is found on the Internet.
