Feature request: Limitting time usage per user.

Hi,

A dutch woman was concerned about her kids using msn messenger to long.

She wants to limit the ammount of time a kid uses msn messenger.

To me as a programmer this seems an interesting problem.

I know in windows NT it was possible to specify the login times when users
where allowed to login...

However this woman's requirements are a bit different.

I also told her limiting her kids might make them aggressive, etc.

Though I can also see other usages for this kind of functionality.

I have no idea how much time I spent on certain programs.

I already told my requirements a few years ago that a time logging feature
per program would be very usefull to get insight
into how much time I or any other person spends on certain programs.

Also for businesses this also seems a bit of an interesting solution to
share computers among their workforce... or for schools/college/universities
where
there are limited resources available and have to be shared...

An administrator can then set a time usage limit per student etc... or maybe
even measuring how long a student spent time on doing his practices etc...
:) to see if he actually tried ;)

Please forward this message to anybody within microsoft who could make all
this 'time stuff' a reality :D

I'm sure it will add to reasons why people like to buy microsoft windows
instead of buying competing solutions/products :)

Bye,
Skybuck.

Ah but microsoft has included that feature in xp already, try R.click C: drive
or whatever xp resides on,properties, quata tab. Each and all users can b
specified time on computer, cmd prompt has similiar,so before you giv
microsoft a hard time, get youre facts straight !

That DOES NOT allocate time in any way, shape or form. It allocates disk
space per user.

Also, the O/P does not want allocations. He wants information on how long
programs are used. He can obtain some of this information through auditing.

There are many ways to restrict programs from running, restrict internet
access, force logoff but at this time third party is needed for the
Dutch(ess).) Here is one, for example.

Control how much time your kids spend on the computer!

Hi Skybuck,

Thank you for your good advice on this time limitation feature.

Currently there is no such tools in Windows XP that can get this job
directly done. You may need to code a little program to do such a specific
job.

It is a cool idea and I am sure it will add value to our Windows systems.

You may write an e-mail to (e-mail address removed) and I believe it may be
added to our next generation of Windows systems.

Thank you again and have a great day!

Best Regards,

Bye,
Skybuck.

And I thought it was just lazy stupid Americans that wanted to hand over
their parental responsibilities to technology! I guess their are lazy and
stupid people the world over.

You should tell the bitch, that she shoundn't have had any brats, if she
didn't want to be personally responsible for them!

How did your parents limit your TV time, when you were growing up? They
turned the f*cker off! And wouldn't you know it, computers have Off
switches too!
