"Faxing" over an IP Address

I am sure this has been asked and rehashed quite a bit but I'll ask it again
as I didn't find any good thread when I searched.

In today's world of "always on" networks and IP connections is there a
Microsoft (or Third Party) application that will allow me to send a "fax"
from my home computer, through my IP Address and ISP, to a fax number out in
the world. I am not so much worried about recieving (though that would be
nice) but it would really speed up a lot of things if I could send a "fax".

I understand a real fax is sent through the phone line as an analog signal
and that a "computer fax" would need to recreate that analog signal, but I
was wondering if anyone knew in this new world of Computers, E-mails and
digital sending if there is some type of fax program out there for this (not
the pay for service on the Internet)

Thank you.

No. You need a web-based fax service.

Example:

eFax

There is a network of volunteers that make their systems available for
faxing to local numbers from their system location but it's very
limited, and not easy to use. You can find it at
"http://www.tpc.int/faxbyemail.html"

However eFax is not the only FAX service out there. Check out
"http://faxaway.com" which charges $1 per month, and around 11 cents per
minute. I've used them a little. You basically attach a Word document
(or a PDF) to an e-mail, send it to them, and they fax it out. You can
also just FAX directly from an e-mail, and they'll format it into a FAX.
$12 per year plus usage isn't bad.

I have been unable to receive faxes from certain numbers using eFAX, but
faxaway works where eFax doesn't. This is one more reason I use them as
opposed to eFax.

The need for a FAX service is increasing as people drop their landlines,
and drop long distance carriers even if they keep a landline. Of course
the times you really need to FAX something anymore are pretty rare, you
can always scan the document and attach it as an e-mail.
