fax service breaks with the new microsoft critical updates

R

Rahul P

Hello All

we have two windows 2000 version 5.0 (sp 4) running sa fax servers. They
handle all the incoming fax, print the documents to a (shared) printer and
stores them to a (shared) network folder.

Everything went fine, until microsoft released the critical updates 10 days
ago. The following updates break our fax service.
KB841872
KB841873
KB839645

I am 100% sure that the disruption is caused by these updates because the
fax service runs fine whenever I remove all those updates and fails when I
apply any one of them.

I have launched a case with microsoft who tries to put the blame on my
modem. we have the following modems on our machines(one on each)

US robotics 56k voice INT PnP (Internal)
56HP92-PCT(Internal)

Does any of you have this problem?? If so, how do you resolve it.
Please reply to (e-mail address removed). Thanks in advance

When you say breaking your fax service what do you mean? Is routing to
shared printer/folder breaking or is sending and receiving of faxes itself
failing?
Also can you please check if there are any events logged into your event
viewer?

Thanks for your reply, chandrasekhar.

we are using two fax machines only for receiving faxes. The reception
failed whenever we apply the critical updates, on both machines. The
following events(8218, 8232) are launched in Application log whenever
the reception broke. The event 8218 repeated all day until we removed
the patches.

Is there a link to where I can read more about SRZ040719000874? I have
the same problem and I can't find anything related to SRZ040719000874.

Thanx in advance.

I dont think you can access the case details. The problem
was basically related to a non-certified modem. So please
check whether your modem is present on Windows HCL list

Thanks,
Chandra
